COMPANY ‘L’ 20th YEAR REUNION
OVERVIEW
by Blas Lopez
Our year 2000. Company ‘L’ Reunion took place in Mesa, Arizona. At the Dobson Ranch Inn and Resort on October 5th thru October 8th..
This reunion was hosted by Donna McGregor Sturman with a lot of help by the rest of the
Sturman family, Eva, Del, and Don. We all agreed they did a great job. I recall Donna was
getting things ready right after the San Mateo reunion. She was right on it. And it took some
fancy coordinating to later juggle things around when one event was not able to go at the date and time planned. She is quite a coordinator. To Donna and the whole Sturman family we give you a big salute with our most sincere congratulations for a very good reunion. We all enjoyed it.
Thursday, October 5th, as is usual is a day for us to arrive and register at the hotel and with the
host. As I have done before on these over views of our reunions, I can only account for events
and experiences I personally had. When with the whole group, of course, we all experience the
same, so at other times I can only report what I did.
Inge and I drove from our home. Arrived at mid afternoon at the hotel. After the usual checking in and unpacking, we ventured out to check the hospitality room. There we found
some of our members. We were told that several had gone to eat at the Inn’s restaurant. We
decided to go eat too. At the restaurant we found a large group who we greeted and joined for
dinner. After dinner we each went our own way.
Friday, October 6th, the hotel provided a free continental breakfast. A number of us took advantage of it. At 10:45 am we started gathering to board a bus to take us to Dolly's Steamboat 90 minute ride on the Salt Water River on Canyon Lake in the Superstition Mountains. After some fancy and very skillful bus driving through a number of hair pin curves
in the mountains, we arrived a little after noon. We boarded the boat for a very interesting and
relaxing tour. The river for the most part is bank by high lava rock mountains some up to 500
feet high. The tour was interesting because you could see how mother nature stacked layers of
lava rock on top of each other. In several places you could distinguish faces or figures of animals or people. It was a relaxing tour due to the serenity of the water although at times disturbed by the wake from a speeding boat going by. They played a very nice soft music most of the way. We returned to the hotel safe and sound. We all headed for our rooms to get ready
for the Banquet.
At 6 pm we all gathered at the Pergola Room. A very nice hexagon shape stand alone building
in the middle of the beautifully landscaped grounds of the hotel. We all enjoyed each others
company at each table. With the conversation ranging into various subjects. Pictures were taken after a very great serving of food and desert. One of the most outstanding events on this
evening was Donna, our host, singing a song for us. With Vern Henderson getting a lot of
attention. I asked Donna later if she was going to sing some more. She said she loves to sing, but her throat was not in its best shape. She is quite a singer from what little we heard.

Friday evening after the banquet several gathered in the hospitality room. Inge and I took
the opportunity to go in the SPA. After that I joined Bones and Alan Henderson in the chairs
right outside of the hospitality room. I was very fortunate to have had a talk about computers
with Alan. He is a web site designer. He has set up a web site for Company L already. As we
send him pictures and write ups about company L he will enter them on the web site and we
will be able to tap into it.
Saturday, October 7th, we all had several hours of free time. Some I am sure gathered in the
hospitality room. As for Inge and myself, we went to Fort McDowell which has an Indian
casino.
Our Company L business meeting was a 3 pm, Saturday. I sent Bones the minutes of the
meeting which he will print in the Carrier. So I’ll just briefly state here that no one volunteered to host next year’s reunion. Ted Verdugo stated that he would like to have a reunion in Louisville, Kentucky where Joe Wimsatt hosted a reunion in 1990. He said he would
contact Maureen Wimsatt Pierce to see if she would host a reunion there. The ladies presented
Donna and Eva Sturman with a gift for hosting our reunion.
Around 5 pm we started to board the bus that would take us to The Rocking R Ranch. We had
quite a treat with live stage entertainment of cowboy music after a bar-b-q dinner on tin plates
just like the old cowboys would get it from their chuck wagon. The entertainers were a whole
family of mother, father, two sons and two daughters. We heard a number of cowboy songs. One of the nicest things that they did was pay tribute to Company L.
After the dinner and stage show we gathered outside around an open area where cowboys shot it out. While we were waiting to be called for dinner we checked the shops which were part of the "ranch". They also had a wagon ride which was a lot of fun. This place also caters to weddings. They had three weddings during the time we were there. After returning to the hotel
Inge and I took advantage of one of the SPA’s. Donna came over to talk with us after we got out and were relaxing by the pool side.
Sunday, October 8, worship services were at 9 am. We had an ex-air force chaplain as the
clergyman who gave the service. We said we didn’t mind if he was not an ex army chaplain.
This gentleman had a sense of humor and we all enjoyed his sermon.
Then came the good bye’s, but as Donna stated on her agenda these were not good bye’s just
so long until we meet again. At any rate, there was a lot of hugging and a few watery eyes as
we parted.
Del, Donna’s husband, was available Sunday all day with his van to take those who needed a ride to the airport. As for Inge and I we detoured by way of Sodona which is something to see.
The scenery is outstanding. From there we stayed overnight at Laughlin, Nevada before going
home. Bones, I hope this covers it. We had a great time.
I would like to fill this page with a joke
As she walked up to the store’s fabric counter, a pretty girl asked, "I want to buy this material for a new dress. How much does it cost?" "On sale today, just one kiss per yard", replied the
young gent behind the counter. "That’s fine", replied the young lady, flashing a gorgeous smile.
"I’ll take 12 yards". With expectation and anticipation written all over his face, the clerk
hurriedly measured out and wrapped the cloth, then held it out teasingly. The girl snapped up the package, turned to go and pointed to a little old man chewing tobacco beside her and said,
"Grandpa will pay the bill".
